Are we not capable of producing global products?

Over the last 15-20 years, while India focused on “services” ecosystem, countries like China have built up both “manufacturing” and “products” ecosystems. As a result, China is not only the “manufacturing” behemoth but also the home for many fast growing global brands like Lenovo, Huawei, Xiaomi, ZTE, Kingsoft, Alibaba, Sina corp and Baidu spanning hardware, software, internet and e-commerce. Where are such product brands from India? India doesn’t have a single company in the top 100 companies in the world by valuation while China has 10.
India is home to millions of brilliant minds, who contribute their innovations to create value for many multinational companies from IBM to Intel to Microsoft to Google to Facebook. It is high time for India to create IBM or Intel or Microsoft or Google or Boeings of the world leveraging its huge talent and market. Many tech giants like Google, Microsoft, Nokia, SanDisk, Adobe etc., are led by Indian diaspora like Sundar Pichai, Satya Nadella, Rajeev Suri, Sanjay Mehrotra and Shantanu Narayen. When Indians can lead global companies that make global products, why can’t Indian Companies make global product brands?
Is it because of lack of robust innovation infrastructure in terms of entrepreneurship, availability of risk capital, market maturity and conducive government policies? Do we lack the risk appetite towards building or funding a company for 3 or 5 or 10 years without revenues and profitability? Is it because in our subconscious, we still idolize foreign products over indigenous produce, even if they are Chinese?
This must change. We must focus on not just “services” and “manufacturing”, but also actual “products”. It is not that we are not capable of producing global products, it is about getting the right impetus from the government as well as corporate India.


It’s about dreams… We grow up dreaming which company to join rather which industry to change… Education has played a vital role… Even in MBA colleges, students are thought how to get best jobs…rather than how to create jobs…things have to change…Let’s take a lead!!

Well, it depends how a country is strategically positioned. When China focused on manufacturing, we focused on services. Flipkart, Snapdeal, OyoRooms, HDFC, Reliance are well known globally!

Having said that, there is always room to improve!

at smartron, we take the view that innovation, design, engineering and products driven companies like Apple, Samsung, Google etc create lot more value and growth in the long term. China has recognized that and as such China is today home to some of fast growing product brands like Huawei, Xiaomi, Lenovo etc. Even on the services side like Flipkart, look at the kind of and the amount of innovation Amazon does to build real IP and value. Products, Manufacturing and Services go hand in hand to create a robust economic growth.
